The 2020 BMS Online Summer Jazz Workshop
Deep into Jazz, You Dig?
This week-long intensive class for intermediate and above musicians aged 11 on up focuses on honing skills for improvisation and small group playing. Participants will explore the world of jazz improvisation and ensemble playing as they develop their abilities to hear jazz, learn basic scales and chords, build a jazz vocabulary for improvisation, and become familiar with harmonic devices that give them the keys to a new world of musical self-expression.
Led by veteran jazz musician and BMS Jazz Department head Jeff Newell and five other members of the BMS Jazz Faculty, this online course will consist of listening to and discussing classic jazz performances in addition to the study of jazz history and theory.
The week will also include putting together a video of the workshop’s student ensemble as they play a jazz classic virtually, while socially distanced, to provide a valuable playing/recording experience while building confidence and knowledge.
Participating BMS Jazz Faculty members will include:
Jeff Newell, Director - Saxophone
Duane Eubanks - Trumpet
Jerrick Matthews - Trombone
Seth Johnson - Guitar
Brian Woodruff - Drums
