About the Music Mentor Program:
Founded in 2010 by Piruz Partow the Music Mentor Program was built off of the fundamental principles that have driven The Brooklyn Music School for over a century; providing an accessible and affordable performing arts education to the community regardless of income, age, and previous experience. Through the Music Mentor Program BMS has been able to offer subsidized private lessons and ensemble classes to our Music Mentors who in turn assist our teaching artists in our After School and Summer Programs. Working in the classroom, our Music Mentors get hands-on experience from our seasoned, veteran teaching artists learning leadership, musicality, and citizenship skills while at the same time sharing their passion and knowledge of music with our younger students. In a sense. they mentor the next generation of musicians while being mentored themselves.
Performance in an integral part of the Brooklyn Music School experience, and there is no greater example than our Music Mentor Program. Over the course of the program, mentors join ensembles classes like orchestra and jazz improvisation as well as form rock bands. Under the supervision of our Rock Ban Dept Chair Alex Rivers, the mentors select songs to make a set, rehearse, and ultimately perform live all the while learning responsibility and gaining teamwork skills that last a lifetime. Over the years, the Music Mentor Rock Bands have been a staple at events in the BMS theater and have taken the stage at some of New York's most prestigious venues including the Bell House, Sidewalk Cafe, and Piano's as well as performing at Council Woman Laurie Cumbo's inauguration, Ft. Greene Park and the Children's Museum. This past spring the Music Mentor Program saw an unprecedented achievement when the students got the opportunity to tour and perform in Belgium.
In addition to practicing and performing, academics are a focal point of the Music Mentor Program, all of our mentors are required to maintain a high-grade point average while participating in the program and Piruz Partow has personally worked with every student as they prepare for auditions and college applications.
The continued success of the Music Mentor Program relies on donations from people like you; members of our community who value the arts and the education of our young men and women. We count on this support now more than ever, as the pool of available arts funding shrinks while the dynamic of our neighborhoods change. We invite you to join us in our century-old Ft Greene school house, enjoy a lovingly prepared brunch, and share in the music and community that has brought so many people together building friendships that last a lifetime.
