Jazz Workshop

This week-long intensive class for intermediate and above musicians aged 11 and up focuses on honing skills for improvisation and small group playing. Participants will explore the world of jazz improvisation and ensemble playing as they develop their abilities to hear jazz, learn basic scales and chords, build jazz vocabulary for improvisation, and become familiar with harmonic devices to give them the keys to a new world of musical self-expression.
Let by veteran jazz musician and BMS Jazz Department head Jeff Newell, the course will consist of playing jazz in a combo setting, as well as listening and watching videos of classic jazz performances and discussing. The week will also include daily master classes with additional BMS Jazz Faculty members and culminate in a performance within the community (TBD) providing valuable experience and confidence building.
