Census 2020

social-media-graphic-5.jpg

BMS is proud to host Census 2020 workers!

The decennial census is a count of every person living in the United States that occurs every 10 years. It is important that every person be counted so that the government can properly distribute $675 billion to communities. The population of every state as counted in the census also determines how many representatives each state is given in the U.S. House of Representatives. You can do your part by making sure an adult in your home counts you—and every person living in your home—in the 2020 Census!

Remembering Our Beloved Edward Morrill

IMG_6068(1).JPG

Dear BMS Community,

We are deeply sad to share the passing of our beloved Theater and Finance Manager Ed Morrill on July 16, 2020 after suffering a stroke. Ed embraced and embodied everything that BMS stands for and he worked incredibly hard at forwarding our mission. He will be truly missed.

As of now, there are no plans for a memorial yet, but we will work with his family and many friends to remember and honor his truly remarkable legacy that he has left us at BMS. Affectionately often referred to as "Sir Edward" or "Uncle Edward," Ed formally joined BMS’ ranks as soon as I began my tenure in 2013, thanks to our partnership with the Brooklyn Children's Theatre. His management of BMS' theater and finances helped BMS enjoy the incredible growth that it has endured over the last six years. He was literally "Mr. Behind the Scenes." He supported everyone all the time and enjoyed doing it. Anyone that has ever stepped into the BMS theater for a performance, has Edward Morrill to thank.

Ed is survived by his live-in family: Charlie Spickler, Beth Peeler, and Kenna and Phoebe Spickler. He is also survived by his BCT family, his Pennsic family, Brooklyn College family, and of course his Brooklyn Music School family, and the countless lives he has touched over the many years of his dedicated service to our community.

Edward Morrill loved BMS. He loved the theater, the students, the music, the programs, the building, the history and the people. He truly loved us all. I look forward to working with you all in honoring Ed's legacy in the months to come and keeping his spirit alive at BMS.

Please feel free to reach out to me if any of you would like to talk about Ed or anything else. Thank you all for your support during this difficult time.

Piruz Partow,
Executive Director

Commitments of the BMS Parent Association:

  1. Meet quarterly (four times a year)

  2. Host one event

  3. Help support the annual gala

  4. Help spread the word about BMS to the community

  5. Present suggestions to the BMS leadership

Thank You for all your support. We hope that you and you and your families are well.

Black Lives Matter

Dear BMS Family,

The Brooklyn Music School staff and I are deeply troubled and frankly heartbroken by the events unfolding in our country, around the world, and right around our Brooklyn block. It has been a week filled with saddening news and devastating turmoil. We at BMS would like to communicate the following in support of our cherished community:

  • The staff and I stand with our immediate community and communities across the globe who have peacefully protested against the profound injustices of systemic racism and police brutality. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of George Floyd, and to the families of all who have lost loved ones because of these continuing societal ills.

  • It is important for us to convey that Black Lives Matter. We combine our voices as one chorus to denounce the persistent, brutal, and unconscionable treatment of black people in our community and country.

  • The Brooklyn Music School was founded by and in the service of immigrants 111 years ago. Diversity and accessibility have always and continue to be fundamental principles in our mission. We are proud to be an integral voice in one of the most vibrant and diverse places on Planet Earth. We will continue to be a haven for people of all backgrounds, ages, and circumstances .

  • The BMS team has always regarded music as a bridge to bring together people of all creeds and interests.

  • Some of BMS’s core programs celebrate  African-American culture. Programs in African Drumming, African Dance, Hip Hop Music and Dance, and of course, Blues, Rock, and Jazz are prominent in our curriculum. We are committed to the preservation of these unique contributions to our American culture.

  • We believe that education through music is a way to ensure a future of equality. In BMS Outreach we provide music programming to over 30 schools and senior centers throughout the borough. While  we currently serve a broad and extremely diverse student body, we are proud of our history of also serving our African-American community over the past 50 years.

  • BMS is committed to using our platform and the channels of music to provide both children and adults of all identities with ways to amplify their voices, acknowledge their feelings, and address the psychological trauma they may be experiencing.

  • If you are able, please consider donating to the  George Floyd’s Memorial Fund and becoming engaged  for further action in support of fairness and justice for  people and communities of color.

In Solidarity,
Piruz Partow, Executive Director, and the BMS Leadership Staff

Dear BMS family,

We hope that you are all safe and well during this highly stressful and confusing time. We want to, above all, thank you deeply for your support and patience in our effort to continue connecting with you all through music. As our current situation continues to develop by the day, we'd like to provide you with details regarding our closure as well as current and future programming.

As of now, our main facility will remain closed per the DOE's guideline until June 26. During this time, we highly recommend that you take advantage of our expanding BMS Online offerings including Private Lessons and Group Classes! We know that so many of you depend on us for care during the summer months, and we are here for you.

Your BMS Team is available to answer all of your questions. Please feel free to contact our registration team at contactus@brooklynmusicschool.org for more information.

An Update from BMS Regarding the Corona Virus

Dear BMS Family,

Due to the rapidly evolving and complex situation around the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we have decided to temporarily close The Brooklyn Music School. The building will be closed as of today, Sunday, March 15th through Monday, April 20, 2020.

Even though, we do not have a report of infection within the BMS community, We are closing out of an abundance of caution for our students, families, faculty, and staff at a time when city and state officials are universally recommending social distancing and limiting movement around New York City.

We will, however, utilize a variety of media to stay virtually connected and provide continuity with music education and community engagement. At this moment in time, we have planned the following:

  • Private lessons will be scheduled by faculty with their students through remote learning options. This past week our faculty have been preparing lessons and training on Zoom. Your teacher will be in touch with you individually about how these lessons will proceed.

  • We will establish ways for group classes to communicate with their teachers and connect to online learning and arts resources.

  • We will be closing the Arts Reaching Youth After School Program. We understand that if public schools remain open, this will be an inconvenience for some families.

  • Stay connected to each other through our social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram.

BMS continues to follow the recommendations provided by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), the New York City Department of Education, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We are carefully monitoring developments, and we will be issuing e-mail and website updates as necessary. At the very least, by March 31, we will re-evaluate the situation and reach back out to you with further information.

Closing BMS is an incredibly difficult decision. Throughout our 110-year history, BMS has served as a Beacon for all to come together in times of need to draw strength from one another and from the immersing themselves in the performing arts. Unfortunately, with this virus, we are experiencing a new kind of crisis that limits our ability to gather as a community.

We ask that you please be patient with us during this time as we move to remote learning. The administration has worked very hard to prepare, but this is still new territory for BMS. We will be in touch at a later date regarding any credits and make-ups.

If you have questions or concerns about this situation, please contact us  at contactus@brooklynmusicschool.org. I sincerely hope these measures allow our community the space it needs to get the outbreak under control. I look forward to welcoming you back to BMS as soon as this crisis is under control.
