#ONECROWNHEIGHTS, a broad coalition of diverse community leaders, in partnership with the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, Brooklyn Children's Museum, Repair the World, Neighbors in Action, and the Jewish Children’s Museum presents the 5th One Crown Heights Neighborhood Festival, Sunday, August 15, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Brower Park. This event has received funding and organizing support from The Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY) in its role as an anchor agency of the Mayor's Office on the Prevention of Hate Crimes ‘Partners Against the Hate’ (PATH) initiative.
2021 marks the 30th Anniversary of the three-day community conflict that shook not only Crown Heights, but all of New York City. One Crown Heights Neighborhood Festival was organized in part to acknowledge the conflict and its impact on the neighborhood. Today, the goal is to continue moving forward with mutual respect for differences and community building.
The event kicks off with the exciting Brooklyn Alliance Drum Line. Next is a lively routine by the Tropical Fete Stilt Walkers and Steel Pan performers, followed by Dovid Pearlman, former member of the Miami Boys Choir, performing music with themes of harmony and community engagement. The next performers are duet violinists Bud and Talyah Jack; Dr. Laz and the CURE, a Jewish and African American band; Dutch Squad Double Dutch; singers Aron Einhorn and Jah Paul; Harmony Music Makers Steel Pans; a magician, and a live DJ. Among the many activities will be the FDNY Smoke House, a basketball clinic, bounce house, NYC Parks Department Play Mobile, Arts and Crafts tables which will include Tie Dye Art, Senior Painting Project, resource vendors, health screenings and more. Brooklyn Children’s Museum will be open and free for all visitors throughout the day.
“#OneCrownHeights Neighborhood Festival has become a paradigm of ways for a community to heal and move forward while fully recognizing the past and the diversity of issues facing us as neighbors today,” said Rabbi Bob Kaplan, Executive Director of the JCRC-NY and a founder of Project CARE, the coalition of community leaders formed shortly after the events of 1991, that created One Crown Heights.
Among those available for interview at the event will be NYC Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, Rabbi Eli Cohen, Executive Director of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Center; Rabbi Bob Kaplan, Executive Director of the JCRC-NY and a founder of Project CARE; Richard Green, Founder and CEO of the Crown Heights Youth Collective and a founder of Project CARE; and, Stephanie Wilchfort, CEO of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
“Our partner groups are excited to hold the event in person after a one-year absence, coming together again as a community and engaging in culturally diverse activities, entertainment, and resources. This will be the second year for one of our newer initiatives, A Community Conversations Tent: ‘Neighbors to Neighbors, Can We Talk,’ where local residents are invited to engage in discussions in a safe space to hear directly from their neighbors,” said Elissa Bernstein, Board member of the American Jewish Committee. Community Conversations is sponsored by the American Jewish Committee and facilitated by participating New York City agencies and OneCrownHeights community-based organizations and stakeholders.
