Joshua Hunton

Violin, Viola

Joshua Hunton is a New York-based violist, currently serving as principal viola for the Regina Opera Company and as orchestra member for the Classical Saxophone Project. As an avid freelancer, performances have taken him to Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, National Sawdust, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and other venues. He can also be heard on “Losing My Mind: A Sondheim Disco Fever Dream,” from Broadway Records, and in Netflix’s “Hun qiu xi men (Green Door).”

Versed in the pedagogies of Shinichi Suzuki, Paul Rolland, Karen Tuttle, and Mimi Zweig, Mr. Hunton serves as both Chamber Music Coordinator and is on the string faculty at Church Street School for Music and Art, Lead for Youth and Family Programs and string faculty at FiDi Creatives: Music Beans, and as a teaching artist with Third Street Music School Settlement and Brooklyn Music School. He previously held posts as Faculty Mentor, Director of Online Orchestras, Chamber Coach, and Teaching Artist with the Harmony Program, on the faculty a Turtle Bay Music School, and Adjunct Instructor at New York University’s Steinhardt School.

Having worked with a diverse range of students and various El Sistema-inspired programs, his philosophy as a music educator is driven by a determination to bring a love for music and sense of belonging to those in every community. He sees teaching as more than just helping students improve their technique and musical artistry. It is also a means to nurture their development as confident, creative, and resilient individuals, equipping them with important skills they will carry into their daily lives.

Mr. Hunton received his B.M. in Viola Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and his M.M. in Viola Performance and Advanced Certificate in Music Education from NYU Steinhardt. His teachers include Stephanie Baer, Ronald Carbone, Masumi Rostad, Peter Slowik, Luis Vargas, and Stephen Wyrczynski.
